What Are the Symptoms of Swelling Eyelids?
Eyelid swelling results from excess fluid in the connective tissues that surround the eye. This swelling may or may not be painful and can affect either or both the upper and lower eyelid.
Eyelid swelling is often accompanied by:
- Itchy eyes
- Photophobia (sensitivity to light)
- Watery eyes
- Discomfort
- Red eyelids
- Obstructed vision
Common Causes of Eyelid Swelling
Common causes of eyelid swelling include:
- Allergies: Dust, pollen, and pet dander are common allergens that can irritate the eyes.
- Pink eye: Conjunctivitis is a type of inflammation of the clear lining on the surface of the eye. The condition can have allergic, bacterial, or viral causes, all of which can result in watery, itchy, or red eyes.
- Injury: Surgery or trauma will cause the eyelids to swell.
- Contact lens use: Dirty lenses or overuse of contact lenses can leave your eyes irritated and swollen. This irritation can eventually spread to your eyelids.
- Periorbital cellulitis: This common infection may be caused by bacteria or viruses. This infection primarily affects the anterior part of the orbital septum (back portion of the eyelids).
- Graves’ disease: An overactive thyroid can cause this ocular disorder, which leads to swollen eyelids and bulging eyes.
Treatments for Swelling Eyes
