Treatments for Farsightedness (Hyperopia)
Previously we blogged about nearsightedness (myopia), which is a common vision problem that many people face. The team at our laser vision correction center now want to turn our attention to farsightedness. This is another vision issue that people may have heard of but have a number of misconceptions about. Let's go over some of the basics about causes and treatment right now.
What is farsightedness?
When a person is farsighted, it is easier to see objects that are at a distance than it is to see objects that are nearby. Farsightedness is also known as hyperopia. (This is the opposite of nearsightedness/myopia.)
What causes farsightedness?
There are two common causes for farsightedness:
- Refractive error - Refractive error refers to issues with the overall shape of curvature of the cornea that causes problems with the passage of light through the eye. Rather than focus on the retina itself, the light focuses behind the retina.
- Presbyopia - Presbyopia is an age-related vision problem that everyone faces starting in middle age. This involves the loss of flexibility in the lens of the eye.
The exact cause of your farsightedness will determine how our laser eye surgeons will remedy the issue.
Common Treatments for Farsightedness
When it comes to addressing farsightedness related to refractive error, the common treatment options are:
- Refractive surgery (LASIK, PRK, LASEK) - Refractive surgery refers to the use of lasers to reshape the cornea and improve the passage of light through the eyes.
- Corrective lenses - Prescription glasses and contact lenses have been a tried and true treatment option for various kinds of vision issues for centuries.
When it comes to addressing farsightedness related to presbyopia, the common treatment options are:
- Intraocular lenses (IOLs) - IOLs are artificial lens implants that are used to replace the hardened lens of the eye. By replacing the hardened/inflexible/flawed lens, optimal vision can be achieved.
- Monovision LASIK - Monovision LASIK refers to the correction of only one eye for near vision while the other remains uncorrected. Patients will need to wear glasses to account for the difference in vision between the two eyes.
- Corrective lenses - When it comes to corrective lenses for presbyopia, there are two common options. Patients can get bifocals or they can have two pairs of glasses, one for near vision tasks and the other for distance vision taks.
